A Miami home health recruiter who pled guilty to conspiracy to receive health care kickbacks has landed a 37-month prison sentence. Manuel Lozano worked for Serendipity Home Health in Miami, according to a Department of Justice release. From April 2007 through March 2009, Lozano recruited patients for Serendipity, receiving kickbacks and bribes from the owners and operators of Serendipity in return for allowing the company to bill the Medicare program on behalf of the patients he recruited. Then the agency billed Medicare for home health care and therapy services that were medically unnecessary and/or not provided, according to court documents.
Serendipity billed Medicare about $20 million in the scheme.
